I am a firm believer that our stories can help us change our perspective and give hope and optimism to others and to ourselves (even if we don’t know it). Stories help us relate to others and engage in the world we live in.
For example, I was very sick last year and thankfully I am better but the process of dealing with being sick was a heavy and emotional burden. I decided to capture what I was feeling in a scrapbook layout. Now when I’m going through other hard times I look back at this layout and realize if I could get through that and survive I can get through my current obstacles. My intension was that other people in a similar situation would see the layout and have hope. Besides documenting all of my good memories I felt it was important to document the serious and challenging times as well. Discouraging experiences may be hard at the moment you are going through them but documenting your journey is a cathartic and encouraging way to get through them.
I know sometimes it is hard to have an outside perspective of our lives as to what will inspire people. Even the ordinary stories of your day-to-day life may inspire someone else to think differently about a certain subject or lift their spirits. Any story or experience can be a muse. It’s a matter of how you look at it.
Even if you think your stories won’t inspire others, document them for yourself! They will help you to think about your life and what’s important to you, to remember the details of the little things and especially the big events that are worth remembering.
Just think that a story you tell could trigger someone to think of things they never would have imagined before or travel to a place they never even wanted to go to. Everyone’s perspective in this world is different and you should be open to seeing things with wide eyes.
I’m more of a visual person and sometimes I would rather just look at the pictures of the stories. A picture does convey a thousand words and can be very inspiring as well. Documenting your stories is important but I encourage you to have images to go with your writing to give them deeper understanding and context. Sometimes people have a hard time visualizing or relating to a story without seeing a picture of it. Also, this is a great way to capture this memory in time for years to come.
I adored Jessica Swift’s post a few weeks ago about capturing the moment and about writing things down, coming back to them later and having them be little treasures of inspiration. Documenting and recording your stories is the same idea and you never know when a certain idea will be a catalyst for someone else. So are you ready to live life inspired and tell your story?
